Riding A v Warners B

4th December 2007

Gill and Mike produced a tight 5 setter which settled on a tie break in the 4th game with Mike 2-1 up, Gill won the tie break 3-1 and went on to claim the 5th for a 3-2 win.
Dave Crees subbing at 2, played well, but lost 3-0. He was never down in the 1st but lost the tie breaker 4-2, lost a close 2nd 12-15, then went into another tie breaker in the 3rd game and lost this 0-2, Ham, cheered on by his team members said " this was an easy 3-0", tongue firmly in cheek!
Then the battle of the 5 set players, at 1-1 it was going to 5, then Martin won a comfortable 3rd, it was still going to 5, Martin got ahead in the 4th, Steve pegged him back (it was heading for 5) when Martin closed Steve out in 4, 15-13, we were all shocked and not ready to go on court!
Then came the lightweights, Mark v Daz. 1st game Daz made all the errors, 2nd game Mark made all the errors, 3rd game Daz served 7 serves that had to be boasted out of the corners from the start and no matter which way Mark went round Daz to get to, see the ball, Daz took an 8-1 lead and closed it out to 10. 4th game much closer with Mark coming back and winning to 13. In the 5th, Daz played the better squash to win 15-9 and the match 3-2.
A tightly contested drawn match 2-2, 9-8 to Warners.
Mike tried explaining the League points system to us all, but we all fell asleep in our chips.
Dave Crees is dropped as he didn't contribute to the score and Martin & Gill want a new No1!

Beverley A v Ferriby A

15th November 2007

Beverley A's 4th home game of the season saw two long matches sandwiched between to one sided contests. Number 1's went on court at around 9.15pm with Ferriby's  Jon Horler hitting his gigantic stride straight away with a stunning first game, racing to a 10-0 lead in a very short space of time. Adam recovered slightly after losing the first 15-6 to nick the second 15-9 but eventually succomed in 4 games without really putting Jon under pressure. At No4 Beverley's poshest player was up against the evergreen Mike Clemson, and managed a straight sets comfortable win.
The real battles were in the middle order with debutante Dave "Bomber" Harris knocking the cover off the ball in the first two games before the tide turned in favour of the grunting Harry Harrison in a third game tie break that he sneaked 3-1. The fourth also went to a tie break as the volume of Harry's grunts increased but again he held his nerve to take that and the 5th in a very good natured match. We wont remind Dave that he had match ball in the third and drilled it in to the tin!
That was just the appetiser for the match of the night as a youthful Rich Townsend faced off against the bandana wearing Chopper Pounder. The match seesawed with Rob inching into a 2-1 lead. His sparkly, bejewelled purple headband was dark with sweat, when halfway through the fourth amid some fierce rallying all his energy seemed to go and he failed to move forward for a killer boast. That was the beginning of the end for Rob and wilted like a flower as Rich plucked the match from under his nose.
It was a great night of squash played in good spirit despite Northy's exotic marking ( only kidding.)!

AFSquash A v Riding A

15th November 2007

Dave Ball kept up his winning ways with a solid  3-1 win against Mark Summers at No 1, Gary Ellliot  AT No2 was too strong for Graham Wright with a 3-0 win.
Closest game of the night was between Lee Yewlett and Martin Garbutt at No3. Lee was carrying a foot injury but this did not stop him from competing all the way to a close 3-2 win.
Alan Beal and Gill Davison at No4 battled through four very close games with Alan eventually winning 3-1.
A good result for App/Frod keeping up their unbeaten run.

Scarborough A v Riding B

27th October 2007

Scarborough won their first match of season at home in a hard and long fought night against Riding B. Tony Ward opened proceedings against Riding number one Glynn Saunders and lost 3-0, though the game was much closer than the score suggests with Tony coming close to winning the first game and nearly mounting a comeback in the third. Tim Adkin then played Rod Tate in a repeat of their match last season and again came out on top winning 3-1. Tim, distracted by the fact it was his birthday lost the first game, but then came back well and won the next 3 games to continue his impressive unbeaten start to the season. Roger Amstell then played Shakeel Siddiqui and won his first match of season 3-1 in a close encounter, again after losing the first game. The final game of the night saw number fours Voyin Maric play veteran Doug Saunders in the closest game of the night. In an up and down match in went all the way with Voyin winning comfortably in the fifth game to ensure an impressive win for Scarborough.

Beverley A v Anlaby A

19th October 2007

After a break of a week due to a cancelled game, Beverley A played hosts to a youngish (sorry Bryan) Analby side with birthday boy Andy Stott first up against veteran Adam Yates. With all of the support seemingly coming from the away rabble the game got off to a bad start for Andy going down two nil after a tight first game. Encouraged family and friends and some inspired between games coaching, Andy showed his class and brought the game level. Both players were suffering the effects of man flu but still the last game was played to a high standard with the young Analby player getting to match point first. With the preceding rallies decided by tired shots into the tin and unforced errors, Adam using his old head on older shoulders played the percentage game and fought back to a tie break. Two tight serves with a flukey nick on match point gave Adam his second victory of the season. Unfortunately the rest of the team couldn't capitalize on this strong start. Sub Mike Straw battled well in getting close to a stylish Chris Forest but was overwhelmed in three. Shane Devoy at No2 was always second best in a hard hitting contest with Bob Marshal and retired to the dressing room after muttering about how he must get fitter and work less...! Andy North and Bryan Youlton went toe to toe in a seesaw 4 game match with Andy just running out of steam in the fourth eventually losing the match 55points to 51. Thanks again to the Durham Ox for the great food and real ale after the match

Riding B v Riding C

18th October 2007

Doug and Scarlet kicked off the Div One game with a less than thrilling Div Eight performance, There was a call of, "this is the worst game of my life" by Scarlet, and if the crowd listened carefully, a dull buzzing sound was coming from Doug's brain, were all thoughts of how to play squash had clearly evaporated! Fortunately, it didn't extend to five games, as Doug took it 3-1 and ended the misery for all involved! Super Sub, Dave Crees was next to go, with the tough task of renewing everyone's faith in the good game! Steve Sutcliffe was the man tasked with spoiling Dave's day, but after ten minutes on court, this looked unlikely. Dave stormed the first two games with a performance to remember, only slowing slightly in the third, when Steve started to shake off his obviously large, corporate lunch. Dave took it 3-0. Rod was next to take on Darren, in a brain versus speed affair. It was quickly paced and entertaining, with Darren forcing Rod out of his usual calm and controlled role. Rod failed to cut the ball out early which made Darren's rallying difficult to cope with and Darren took the game 3-1. Glyn and Mike were last on court, with a legs versus legs affair, the only predictable outcome. Glyn seemed to get a taste of his own medicine in the first game, with Mike picking up every one of his repetitively loose shots, Mike took it 15-13 after trailing the whole game. Glyn decided nobody was taking his "can't play squash but can run for England" crown and settled down into his mammoth rallying game. Mike struggled with his final shots in a number of long rallies and Glyn stumbled over the finishing line to win 3-1. Not the performance of the century by either player, but at least Mike got through it with the soles of his feet in one piece this year!

Riding A v Scarborough A

16th October 2007

Riding A hosted Scarbro', first match was the tightest so far this season between Gill Davison and Voyin Maric, scores of 8, 13, 10 and 11 made it 2-2, but the decider got tighter and tighter, both players working hard, when at 14 all, tie-breaker, Voyin came through 2-0 to seal the win. Another hard fought game at 3 between Martin Garbutt and Tim Adkin, this was always going to be a long game ?, after they shared the opening 2 games, Tim came through winning the last 2,15-11, 15-12 for a 3-1 win. Scarbro' now 2-0 up The next 2 games were a total contrast, Graham Wright overcoming Roger Amstell 3-0, (5,7 and 10) and Mark Summers beating newcomer Tony Ward 3-0 ( 12, 8 and 4). So a drawn game with Riding 9 points and Scarbro' 6

Beverley A v Scarborough A

4th October 2007

First match of the season using the new scoring system designed to speed things up came slightly unstuck as 3 of the four matches went to five games. Andy North's debut for Beverley was a hard fought 3-2 victory, with most of the game been played at close quarters with neither player giving an inch of territory away. Although frenetic and scary the game was played in good grace. Shane Devoy started his season still trying to get to match fitness, (the same as every year ) Started like a train taking the first game with only the loss of 4 points and hitting the cover off the ball at every opportunity. Unfortunately his heavy work schedule and lack of match fitness took its toll and Tim gradually reeled in the match in 5 games. Beverley welcomed back to its team Rob Pounder who had a sabbatical last year from the hectic world of team squash to start a family and grow his hair. A slow start saw young Rob fall behind in the first two but once he found his feet he turned it on in the 3rd and 4th before a tight 5th saw him and Roger Amstell neck and neck up to 13points each, with Rob just edging it in the end. The only straight sets game of the night, saw Adam Yates comfortably through against Tony Ward. A long first game took too much out of the Whitby man as Adam took the last two games comfortably.

Analby A v Warners B

1st October 2007

Mike Archibald and George Marshall stared the season off with Archibald going 2 games up only to cockle an ankle at the end of the second game. He limped on for another 3 games but Marshall was quick to pounce and exploit the injury. Next came Steve Oxley and Bri Youlton in a 5 set thriller, a long and hard battle with both players putting in 100%. Bri coming out victorious in the end. At 2's, a not match fit, Bob Marshall took on Chris Moverley, Chris took the game 3-0 with an amazing comeback from 14-7 down in the third - impossible! And last but not least, Andy Stott struggled to contain an inform Daz Beckett, a great game to watch! A good night was had by all (apart from Bob of course!)
